I am a tailor in the village of Kokrobite, outside Ghana's capital city of Accra.  Through this site I sell handmade patchwork bags and clothing which I know you will love.

Welcome to my tailor shop in Kokrobite, a village 40km west of Accra, the capital city of Ghana.  Kokrobite is a fishing village and also a tourist destination because of the beach.  My shop is on the main road to the beach, just before the turnoff to Big Millys Backyard, a local hotel and restaurant.

Why not select a bag or custom outfit?

Before moving to Kokrobite in 2004 I had a shared shop with several other artists.  We rented a workshop together in Accra and each person made their own items: drums, wood carvings, clothing and jewelry.  I opened my own shop in 2006.  My friend Maputo Mensah, a master drummer and dancer, brought a group from the States to Kokrobite, to teach dancing and drumming at the African Arts and Music Academy.  I had so many customers that one month that I was able to open a shop rather than working at home.  I built that first shop with bamboo slats for the walls and roof.  The summer of 2007 Maputo brought another large group to the village and I was able to save money to rebuild my shop in plywood and install a metal roof.

Making the Patchwork Cloth

I create the patchwork cloth mostly from remnants.  I buy the pieces from several tailors in Accra, which is about a 90 minute bus ride from my house.  These tailors all work in the traditional African way from their homes.  Customers bring them the clothe to sew for them.

I've been working with some of these tailors for years. I purchase the extra pieces.   The first step in creating patchwork cloth is to iron the remnants and sort them by size.  Smaller remnants are joined for smaller bags.  After the remnants are cut into squares I start the joining process.  I lay out the materials and match contrasting and complementary colors.
